At some point during the game, Reservoir High football coach Matt Banta acknowledged, he will look up and see standout junior Khalil Malloy hunched over and trying to catch his breath.
“He’s just so valuable for us, he can’t come off the field,” Banta said. “Even when he’s sucking wind and needs a breather. He just does whatever we need for us to win.”
A junior who is in his third season starting on both offense and defense, Malloy continued to make the big plays this past Friday. On offense as the Gators try to find more ways to put the ball in his hands, Malloy rushed four times for 28 yards and one touchdown and caught eight passes for 98 yards and two more touchdowns. On defense, he made eight tackles with two tackles for loss. On special teams, he blocked two punts as Reservoir beat Mount Hebron, 28-6.
For his efforts, Malloy was named the Military Bowl Touchdown Club High School Football Player of the Week.
This latest effort was just another in a string of standout performances for Malloy, who has lined up all over the field. On offense, he usually plays wide receiver, though there is a package of plays for him to play quarterback. Defensively, he starts at safety, but often plays up near the line of scrimmage to give Reservoir an extra linebacker. Through eight games, he has rushed for 153 yards and two touchdowns, caught 48 passes for 585 yards and six touchdowns, made 52 tackles, intercepted six passes and blocked three punts.
“He came in as a freshman and had a bunch of splash plays. That’s when we knew we had something special,” Banta said. “The kid just doesn’t come off the field. Kickoff team, punt team, whatever. He just contributes in all sorts of ways.”
