University of Maryland running back Roman Hemby, who rushed 24 times for a career-high 179 yards and three touchdowns, including the game-winning 75-yard score late in regulation, is the DC Touchdown Club Washington Metro College Player of the Week after leading the Terrapins to a 31-24 victory over Northwestern this past Saturday.

A redshirt freshman from Edgewood, Maryland, Hemby came through when Maryland needed him most. Northwestern had scored to tie the game at 24 with less than four minutes remaining. But on the next play from scrimmage, Hemby burst through the left side line of scrimmage, picked up some blocks and outraced the defense for the longest run of his college career.

“He showed exactly what we talk about with his ability to hit the home run,” Maryland Coach Mike Locksley said. “It couldn’t have happened at a better time for us. We needed it.”

The Terrapins (6-2) were playing without quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa and Hemby’s fellow running back Antwain Littleton II, who were injured.

Hemby was ready to pick up the slack, setting career-highs in rushing attempts, yardage and touchdowns. Hemby leads all Big Ten freshmen with seven rushing touchdowns and he was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week for the second time this season. It was his fourth 100-yard game this season.

“It’s just when your number is called, being ready,” Hemby said. “I can’t determine how many carries I get in a game, but what I do with the carries is all on me. Taking advantage of the opportunity I get.”
