Week 5: MarShawn Lloyd, Green Bay Packers
/Green Bay Packers running back MarShawn Lloyd, who starred at DeMatha Catholic High School in Hyattsville, has been named the DC Touchdown Club Pro Player of the Week after scoring the first two rushing touchdowns of his NFL career to help the Packers to a lopsided victory.
The running game has been a source of frustration this season for the Packers, who did not have a rushing touchdown in their previous four games.
Lloyd, who played collegiately at South Carolina and Southern Cal, was selected in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft. Due to injuries, he played in only one game as a rookie and missed all of last season. He caught a touchdown pass earlier this season against the New York Jets and finally took a carry into the end zone this past Sunday.
Lloyd’s first touchdown came on a seven-yard run in the second quarter as bowled over a would-be tackler. His four-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter was much easier after he made a nifty cut. Lloyd finished with 31 yards on 10 carries as the Packers beat the Chicago Bears, 31-7.
“Man, that was great,” Packers quarterback Jordan Love told reporters after the game. “I think it’s something we talk about as well that we need to improve. We need to improve the running game, we need to get some rushing touchdowns. To have two right there was huge. MarShawn, I mean, we talked about it throughout the week, running behind his pads. You know there’s always going to be somebody unblocked on some runs, and you got to be able to run somebody over, and that’s what he did right there.
“I thought the other run was fantastic when he was able to bounce that. I thought he had a great job on both those touchdowns. Like we mentioned, it’s just how can we improve and take it to the next level.”
