Week 9: Coleman Cauley, Navy

Navy linebacker Coleman Cauley has been named the DC Touchdown Club Washington Metro College Football Player of the Week after a standout performance in his first collegiate start helped the Midshipmen continue their best start since 1978.

Cauley, a junior who saw action mainly on special teams the past two seasons, was rewarded for his play as a reserve this year and took full advantage of the opportunity. He made nine tackles, forced and recovered a fumble on what Navy Coach Brian Newberry called the game’s biggest play and intercepted a pass as the Midshipmen beat Florida Atlantic, 42-32, this past Saturday. Navy is now 7-0 for the first time in 47 years and has won 10 consecutive games, matching a school record.

“The rent is due every day around here,” Newberry said. “It comes down to production and it’s not just the way you practice but also the way you play on Saturdays. When Coleman got the opportunity, he made the most of it. … We felt that was the move. I’m really proud of him.”

Navy’s lead was 21-13 late in the third quarter when Florida Atlantic stopped the Midshipmen on fourth-and-2 and took over at its own 19-yard line. On the next play, wide receiver Dom Henry took a short pass to the left and burst down the sideline. Cauley chased him down from behind, stripped the ball and then snatched the ball as it sat on the turf.

“That’s what we call an ‘eat’ play – an effort, attitude, toughness play and he chases a guy down the sideline, looks like it’s maybe going for a touchdown and he hustles his rear end off and knocks the ball out,” Newberry said. “That’s a huge play in the game.”

It took the Midshipmen just four plays to score. On Florida Atlantic’s next possession, Cauley was sprinting in the direction of a pass when the ball caromed to him and he caught it. Again, it took the Midshipmen just four plays to get into the end zone.

“I might go to the casino later,” Cauley said jokingly with a broad smile. “I got lucky on that one.”

Week 8: Micah Robinson, Bowie State

Bowie State University running back Micah Robinson has been named the DC Touchdown Club Washington Metro College Football Player of the Week after the best performance of his career led the Bulldogs to a 42-37 win at Bluefield State this past Saturday.

Robinson, a redshirt sophomore, set career highs with 31 carries for 193 yards and matched his career high with four touchdowns as Bowie State built a big lead and held on for the win.

“His running style – he’s slippery and has really good contact balance,” Bowie State offensive coordinate Matt Goggans said. “He has good vision as well. The good ballplayers don’t get squared up and form tackled very often or easily and he falls into that boat. You never see anyone get a good shot on him. He’s having a really good year.”

Robinson’s emergence has been a reward for his patience. Recruited by the previous coaching staff at Bowie, Robinson joined the team as a walk on but could only practice during the 2022 and 2023 seasons because of academic issues. Goggans said that Robinson turned things around in the classroom and he got going on the field last season, including back-to-back games with 181 yards and 171 yards rushing.

This season, Robinson has been sharing the workload with Maximus Jones, but Robinson burst through this past Saturday with four touchdown runs in the first three quarters.

“We saw glimpses of this” during his two seasons on the scout team, Goggans said. “It probably was really helpful not just for him to get the reps but also for our defense to get a look at a really good player. He didn’t complain about having to sit out. He took the bull by the horns and bought into everything we asked him to do. He’s been doing a great job academically lately and doing a great job on the football field.”

This week’s DC Touchdown Club Washington Metro College Football Player of the Week honor roll:

  • Ohio RB Sieh Bangura (DeMatha Catholic) rushed 22 times for 147 yards and three touchdowns as the Bobcats beat Northern Illinois, 48-21.

  • Christopher Newport QB Connor Barry completed 12 of 15 passes for 202 yards and four touchdowns as the Captains beat Kean, 49-0.

  • Susquehanna QB Josh Ehrlich (Broadneck) completed 24 of 28 passes for 313 yards and five touchdowns and rushed eight times for 52 yards as the River Hawks beat Juniata, 56-7.

  • Georgetown WR Jimmy Kibble (Loudoun County) caught seven passes for 141 yards as the Hoyas beat Colgate, 21-17.

  • Florida K Trey Smack (Severna Park) made all three of his field goal attempts, including from 53 and 54 yards, as the Gators beat Mississippi State, 23-21.

  • Frostburg State WR Tra’Shaun Timmons (South River) caught eight passes for 152 yards and two touchdowns as the Bobcats beat Charleston, 32-30 in double overtime.

Week 7: Blake Horvath, Navy

Navy quarterback Blake Horvath has been named the DC Touchdown Club Washington Metro College Football Player of the Week after the latest performance in his incredible career helped the visiting Midshipmen rally for a 32-31 win at Temple this past Saturday.

Horvath, who was the Touchdown Club Washington Metro College Player of the Year last season, struggled a little in the passing game, completing just 6 of 16 passes for 141 yards and one touchdown. But the senior, in his second full season as a starter, took care of business on the ground, rushing 19 times for 155 yards and two touchdowns.

The undefeated Midshipmen (6-0) trailed 31-24 in the final minute and were down to perhaps to final play, facing fourth and 1 from their own 49 yard line. Horvath took the snap, fakes a handoff and kept the ball himself, sprinting up the middle untouched for a 51-yard touchdown with 39 seconds left, pulling Navy within 31-30.

Instead of going the safe route and kicking an extra point to force overtime, Navy went for a two-point conversion and the win. Horvath rolled to his right, held the ball until the last possible moment and, just before being tackled, passed to running back Alex Tecza in the right side of the end zone for the game-winning points.

“I felt like we needed to go for the win right there, didn’t really want to go to overtime,” Navy Coach Brian Newberry said. “We knew they were going to call a timeout, most likely, because the formation was a little wacky and they had one to burn. So we had two plays ready to go.

“And having [Horvath] at quarterback, with the ball in his hands and the game’s on the line, he’s a special player. I wouldn’t trade him for anybody in the country. He made it happen. Big time play and big time finish.

“He’d be the first one to tell you he didn’t play perfect tonight. We missed some throws and some opportunities. But when the game is on the line, you want the ball in his hands. He never presses. He never flinches. His composure is outstanding.”

This week’s DC Touchdown Club Washington Metro College Football Player of the Week honor roll:

  • Shippensburg RB Ethan Arneson (Linganore) rushed 23 times for a career-high 121 yards and one touchdown as the Raiders beat Millersville, 41-28.

  • Catholic LB Evan Chromy made a career-high 13 tackles with 1 ½ tackles for loss and forced a fumble as the Cardinals beat Juniata, 20-17.

  • Susquehanna QB Josh Ehrlich (Broadneck) completed 25 of 32 passes for 279 yards and three touchdowns and also rushed 10 times for 53 yards and one touchdown as the River Hawks beat Lycoming, 69-7.

  • USC S Bishop Fitzgerald (Gar-Field) made five tackles with one sack and intercepted two passes as the Trojans beat No. 15 Michigan, 31-13.

  • James Madison S Jacob Thomas (Stone Bridge) made five tackles, intercepted a pass and broke up a pass as the Dukes beat Louisiana, 24-14.

Week 6: Eli Heidenreich and Blake Horvath, Navy

Navy quarterback Blake Horvath and wide receiver Eli Heidenreich have been named the DC Touchdown Club Washington Metro College Football Players of the Week after their record-setting performances led the undefeated Midshipmen to a 34-31 win over visiting Air Force this past Saturday in Annapolis.

Horvath, who was the Touchdown Club Washington Metro College Player of the Year last season, enjoyed one of the best days ever by a Navy quarterback. He completed 20 of 26 passes for a career-high 339 yards and three touchdowns, tying his career high. He also rushed 17 times for 130 yards and another score. Horvath’s 469 yards of total offense were a school record.

“Special is the perfect word for him,” Heidenreich said. “Ever since he stepped on the field for us, he’s been special. He’s a guy who has a different level of poise and I think that’s the biggest thing. This game was close, but with him it didn’t really feel that way.”

“I’m glad he’s on our side,” Navy Coach Brian Newberry said. “He never flinches. He never panics. He never presses. He’s calm, cool and collected and just a special talent. He’s a winner and that permeates the rest of our team.”

Heidenreich had a career-high eight catches for a school-record 243 yards and three touchdowns. It was after one of those touchdowns that Heidenreich leaped atop the fence surrounding the field at the stadium’s north end zone so that his father and friends could congratulate him.

“It was a great day,” Heidenreich said. “It felt like playing catch with Blake out there and doing what we’ve been doing all summer leading up to the season. We’ve put a lot of time in, all the guys on offense have. We really have invested a lot and it’s nice to see it come to fruition.”

This week’s DC Touchdown Club Washington Metro College Football Player of the Week honor roll:

  • Duke DE Wesley Williams (Battlefield) made a career-high nine tackles with 3 ½ tackles for loss and 1 ½ sacks as the Blue Devils beat Cal, 45-21..

Week 5: Matei Fitz, Richmond

University of Richmond defensive lineman Matei Fitz, who played at Tuscarora High in Leesburg, has been named the DC Touchdown Club Washington Metro College Football Player of the Week after his standout performance helped the Spiders rally for a 13-12 win over Howard this past Saturday.

Fitz made a season-high seven tackles and delivered perhaps the biggest play of the game when he intercepted a pass deep in Howard territory midway through the fourth quarter. It was Fitz’s second career interception – his first in three years – and set up the go-ahead score.

“When the play started, I just went and started playing screen,” Fitz said. “I saw the running back leak out and I was in great position. I saw the ball and I kind of blacked out, so I don’t really know what happened there. But I just know I ended up with the ball and it worked out well.”

The Spiders (3-2) took over on the Howard 7-yard line and scored on the following play.

It was another strong game for Fitz, who started his career at James Madison. He redshirted there his freshman year in 2021, then transferred to Richmond, where he has become a mainstay. Now a senior, he is in his second full season as a starter.

“When I got to college, it was a rude awakening and I knew it was going to take some time for me to work my way up the depth chart,” Fitz said. “I didn’t know if I was going to be able to do that at JMU, so that’s when I came here. I had an opportunity and I jumped on it. It was the best decision I ever made.”

University of Maryland linebacker Daniel Wingate, who played at Pallotti High in Laurel, has been named the DC Touchdown Club Washington Metro College Football Player of the Week after leading the Terrapins to a 27-10 win at Wisconsin as they improved to 4-0 this season.

Wingate, who leads the Big Ten Conference and is fifth nationally with 39 tackles, made 11 tackles with 1 ½ tackles for loss and one sack as Maryland’s defense continued its terrific start to the season. Even after allowing a last-minute touchdown to Wisconsin, Maryland has allowed 10.8 points per game, which ranks 13th nationally.

Wingate, who has made at least 10 tackles in each of the team’s games against Football Bowl Subdivision opponents this season, has steadily progressed through Maryland’s program.

He played in 11 games and made seven tackles as a freshman in 2023. Last season, as a sophomore, he played in all 12 games and ranked third on the team with 50 tackles. This season, taking on a more prominent role, Wingate is on pace to eclipse last season’s total in less than half a season.

“His leadership is what really jumps out to me,” Coach Michael Locksley said recently. “He’s been this way since he got here on campus and has played behind some really talented players.”

With several younger players in a starting lineup, Wingate has taken time to show them what to expect and how to handle the transition from high school to college.

“I am going to show them how to compete,” Wingate said in an interview before the season. “I’m going to bring the energy every day.”

University of Delaware wide receiver Kyre Duplessis, who played at Woodbridge High, has been named the DC Touchdown Club Washington Metro College Football Player of the Week after leading the Blue Hens to a historic victory.

Duplessis, a graduate student who transferred from Coastal Carolina, set career highs with nine catches for 161 yards and one touchdown as Delaware beat U-Conn, 44-41 in overtime for its first win over a Football Bowl Subdivision opponent as an FBS member. The Blue Hens, a perennial contender in the Football Championship Subdivision, moved up to FBS this season, joining Conference USA.

Delaware (2-1) opened its season by beating FCS Delaware State as Duplessis caught seven passes for 89 yards and one touchdown. The Blue Hens then traveled to Colorado and lost to the Buffaloes. A near-capacity crowd of 17,862 turned out for Saturday’s game.

Duplessis has played a significant role in Delaware’s offensive success this season. In five seasons at Coastal Carolina, he was primarily a special teams players, totaling 23 catches for 340 yards and one touchdown. He should soon pass those numbers in just one season at Delaware, leading the team with 17 catches for 263 yards and two touchdowns in three games.

On Saturday, his career-long 68-yard touchdown catch in the second quarter put the Blue Hens ahead, 28-24.

“We prepared hard and showed we can play at this level,” Duplessis said.

Barry, who played at Madison High in Vienna, completed 14 of 17 passes for 271 yards and five touchdowns. Four of the scores went to Hart, who played at Stone Bridge High in Ashburn. He finished with seven catches for 199 yards and three touchdowns.

“You couldn’t ask for a better start, right?” Christopher Newport Coach Paul Crowley said. “We feel like those two guys are pretty special with their talent.”

Barry began his collegiate career at Appalachian State before transferring to Christopher Newport, which is located in Newport News, Va. He played in nine games as a freshman then was thrust into a leading role last season after starter Matt Dzierski was injured early in the season. Barry earned first-team all-New Jersey Athletic Conference honors. He returned to the starting role this season, with Dzierski – a three-time first-team All-NJAC performer and two-time NJAC Offensive Player of the Year, moving to wide receiver.

Hart has been a three-time first-team All-NJAC honoree. He entered the season fifth among active NCAA Division III players in receiving yardage and his 23 career touchdown catches are second in school history.

“It was pretty clear a few days into practice his freshman year that, ‘Okay, this kid moves a little differently than everybody else and he has elite ball skills,’ ” Crowley said. “And with Connor, his arm strength was pretty special. He just happened to have Matt in front of him at the time.”

Week 1: Cam Ross, Virginia

courtesy university of virginia athletics

University of Virginia wide receiver Cam Ross, who starred at St. John’s College High School in Northwest Washington, has been named the DC Touchdown Club Washington Metro College Football Player of the Week after leading the Cavaliers to a season-opening 48-7 win over visiting Coastal Carolina this past Saturday.

Ross, a transfer from James Madison who was named third-team All-Sun Belt Conference last season, returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown and caught seven passes for 124 yards and another touchdown as Virginia earned a lopsided victory.

“A couple days into practice, you saw that, one, he’s a football player,” Virginia Coach Tony Elliott said. “He’s got really good football instincts and he’s got a great skillset as a receiver.”

Ross played his first four seasons of college football at Connecticut, where his first coach was Randy Edsall. Edsall had coached Ross’s older brothers, Brandon and Jarrett, at the University of Maryland. Ross played in 28 games for the Huskies, making 16 starts and catching 114 passes for 1,356 yards and six touchdowns. He spent last season as a graduate transfer at James Madison, catching 37 passes for 443 yards and three touchdowns and averaging 28.2 yards per kickoff return.

But Ross always desired to play in one of the power conferences, and that led him to nearby Charlottesville. The Cavaliers have dozens of transfers on their roster, including several higher-profile receivers, but it was Ross who stole the show in the season opener.

“That’s why I came here,” Ross told reporters after the game. “I always wanted to do it at the highest level. I feel like every chance I’ve had has been kind of moving up a step. [This level] is definitely where I feel I should have been at. But I’m here now. I’m just trying to capitalize on it.”
